STORYLINE
Happy Death Day is a clever and darkly comedic slasher film that follows Theresa ‘Tree’ Gelbman, a self-absorbed college student who is forced to relive the day of her murder in a continuous time loop. The nightmare begins on her birthday when she wakes up in the dorm room of a kind classmate named Carter Davis. After a day filled with dismissive behavior toward her peers and family, Tree is brutally murdered by a mysterious figure wearing a mask of the university’s baby mascot, only to immediately wake up back in Carter’s bed with her memories intact.
Realizing she is trapped in a temporal anomaly, Tree must use each repeating day to investigate her potential killers, which includes a long list of classmates and acquaintances who harbor grudges against her. As she dies repeatedly in increasingly creative and painful ways, she begins to undergo significant personal growth, transforming from a mean-spirited socialite into a more empathetic and resilient person. With Carter’s help, she systematically eliminates suspects while racing against time, as the physical toll of her repeated deaths begins to weaken her body.
Blending elements of Groundhog Day with classic slasher tropes, the film delivers a suspenseful, witty, and fast-paced mystery. Directed by Christopher Landon and starring Jessica Rothe in a breakout performance, Happy Death Day successfully revitalizes the horror genre with its unique premise, sharp humor, and engaging protagonist.
