STORYLINE
Lonely Planet is a romantic drama film written and directed by Susannah Grant. The story centers on Katherine Loewe, a reclusive and highly acclaimed novelist who travels to a prestigious writers’ retreat in Morocco in hopes of breaking through a severe case of writer’s block. Struggling with personal crossroads and feeling disconnected from her creative drive, Katherine seeks solace in the serene North African setting.
Her quiet solitude is interrupted when she meets Owen Brophy, a younger finance professional attending the retreat alongside his ambitious novelist girlfriend, Lily. As Lily becomes fully immersed in the literary world and its vibrant social circle, Owen finds himself increasingly sidelined and alienated. Drawn together by their shared sense of outsider status, Katherine and Owen begin spending time together, developing a deep, intellectual connection that quickly evolves into a passionate affair.
Throughout their time in Morocco, Katherine and Owen navigate complex feelings of guilt, desire, and emotional vulnerability. Their unexpected relationship becomes a transformative journey for both, rekindling Katherine’s artistic voice and altering the course of Owen’s future. Starring Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth, the film explores themes of intimacy, creative renewal, and self-discovery.
