STORYLINE
Love Aaj Kal (2009), directed by Imtiaz Ali, explores the evolving nature of romantic relationships across two different generations. The contemporary story follows Jai Vardhan Singh (Saif Ali Khan) and Meera Pandit (Deepika Padukone), a modern-day couple living in London. They share a highly practical, career-oriented relationship and decide to break up amicably when Meera moves to India for her career and Jai heads to San Francisco. Believing that long-distance relationships do not work, they try to move on with other partners while remaining close friends.
Parallelly, the film narrates a vintage love story from 1965 through Veer Singh Panesar (Rishi Kapoor), who observes Jai’s casual attitude toward love. Veer recounts his own youth in Punjab, where he fell in love with Harleen Kaur (Giselli Monteiro) at first sight. Despite facing immense distance, societal barriers, and having barely spoken to her, Veer’s devotion remained absolute and unwavering. This classic tale of unconditional love serves as a stark contrast to Jai and Meera’s modern, logical approach to romance.
As the narrative progresses, both Jai and Meera realize that their practical decisions have left them emotionally unfulfilled. Despite trying to settle down with other people, they find themselves constantly drawn back to each other. Ultimately, Jai realizes that love cannot be rationalized or scheduled, leading to a heartfelt realization and a passionate reunion that bridges the gap between the love of yesterday and today.
