STORYLINE
Rain Fall (2009), directed by Max Mannix and based on Barry Eisler’s novel, is an intense action thriller set in the neon-lit streets of Tokyo. The story follows John Rain (Kippei Shiina), a half-Japanese, half-American Vietnam War veteran and skilled assassin who specializes in making high-profile hits appear as natural deaths. Rain’s lethal routine is disrupted when he is contracted to eliminate Yasu Kawamura, a government official carrying a microchip loaded with damning evidence of widespread political corruption.
After carrying out the hit on a crowded Tokyo subway car, Rain discovers that Kawamura’s innocent daughter, Midori (Kyoko Hasegawa), a talented pianist, has become the next target. Ruthless CIA Tokyo station chief William Holt (Gary Oldman) deploys a squad of covert operatives to retrieve the stolen data at all costs. Driven by his personal code of honor, Rain assumes the role of Midori’s shadow protector, rescuing her from lethal ambushes while keeping his true identity as her father’s killer hidden.
As the CIA’s manhunt intensifies across Tokyo, Rain relies on his stealth and combat expertise to dismantle Holt’s mercenary force. The climax sees Rain confront Holt directly, ensuring the corrupt conspiracy is exposed and securing Midori’s freedom. After eliminating the immediate threats, Rain slips back into obscurity, leaving Midori safe but forever changed by the underground war fought in her name.
