STORYLINE
Stanley Ka Dabba is a heartwarming Indian comedy-drama written, directed, and produced by Amole Gupte. The story revolves around Stanley, a charismatic and highly imaginative fourth-grade student at Holy Family High School in Mumbai. While Stanley is incredibly popular among his classmates and adored by his English teacher, Miss Rosy, he harbors a secret: he never brings a lunchbox (dabba) to school, often surviving on water during recess or sharing food with his generous friends.
This habit draws the intense ire of Babubhai Verma, a gluttonous Hindi teacher who routinely steals food from the students’ lunchboxes. Verma becomes deeply resentful of Stanley’s popularity and his lack of a tiffin, eventually banning the young boy from attending school until he can bring his own lunch. The narrative takes a poignant turn as it explores the resilience of childhood innocence against the backdrop of systemic neglect and child labor.
The emotional climax of the film reveals the tragic reality of Stanley’s life: he is an orphan living with an abusive uncle who forces him to work at a local restaurant. Despite his harsh circumstances, Stanley’s spirit remains unbroken. With the help of a kind-hearted cook, he manages to bring an impressive multi-tiered tiffin to school, securing his place back in class and forcing a guilt-ridden Verma to resign in shame.
