STORYLINE
The Royal Tenenbaums follows the eccentric, estranged patriarch Royal Tenenbaum and his dysfunctional family of former child prodigies. Decades after abandoning his wife Etheline and their three extraordinarily gifted childrenβfinancial genius Chas, playwright Margot, and tennis prodigy RichieβRoyal learns that Etheline is considering a marriage proposal from her accountant, Henry Sherman. Desperate to reclaim his place in the family home and avoid complete isolation, Royal feigns a terminal illness, forcing his grown children to reluctantly gather under one roof.
As the family reconvenes in their childhood brownstone, underlying traumas, secret loves, and lingering resentments resurface. Chas struggles with overprotective anxiety following the tragic loss of his wife, Margot lives in extreme secrecy with her older husband Raleigh St. Clair while harboring feelings for Richie, and Richie grapples with a career-ending breakdown caused by his unspoken devotion to Margot. Meanwhile, family friend Eli Cash, a self-destructive novelist, further complicates their delicate family dynamic.
Through its signature aesthetic, dry humor, and deep emotional resonance, the narrative explores themes of grief, redemption, and forgiveness. As Royal’s deception is inevitably exposed, he is forced to confront the genuine damage he inflicted on his family and make sincere, unselfish efforts to help them heal before it is truly too late.
