In a dystopian future where Earth is dying from a global blight and severe dust storms, humanity’s survival hangs by a thread. Joseph Cooper, a widowed former NASA pilot turned farmer, stumbles upon a secret NASA facility led by Professor John Brand. Brand reveals that a mysterious wormhole, likely created by an alien intelligence, has appeared near Saturn, offering a gateway to a distant galaxy with potentially habitable planets. Cooper is recruited to pilot the Endurance, a spacecraft tasked with following the path of the “Lazarus missions” to evaluate three candidate planets: Miller, Mann, and Edmunds.

Leaving behind his heartbroken daughter Murphy and son Tom, Cooper embarks on a perilous journey alongside Brand’s daughter Amelia, scientists Romilly and Doyle, and tactical robots TARS and CASE. As they navigate the extreme gravitational forces of Gargantua, a supermassive black hole, they face severe time dilation where hours on a planet equal decades on Earth. This temporal rift strains Cooper’s promise to return, especially as Murphy grows into a brilliant NASA scientist working to solve a gravity equation necessary to evacuate Earth’s population.

The mission takes a dramatic turn as they encounter betrayal, harsh planetary environments, and the crushing reality of their options. Cooper ultimately sacrifices himself by plunging into Gargantua to send critical quantum data back to Murphy through a five-dimensional tesseract. This mind-bending climax bridges space and time, enabling Murphy to save humanity, while Cooper is eventually rescued and reunited with his now-elderly daughter before setting off to find Amelia on a new world.
