STORYLINE
Talvar is a critically acclaimed Indian crime drama thriller directed by Meghna Gulzar and written by Vishal Bhardwaj. The film is based on the infamous 2008 Noida double murder case involving 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar and 45-year-old Hemraj Banjade. Presented through a Rashomon-style narrative, the story examines three conflicting perspectives on the murder investigation, highlighting the divergent theories put forward by local police and two separate teams from the Central Department of Investigation.
The film stars Irrfan Khan as Ashwin Kumar, a methodical senior investigator from the CDI who takes over the case after the local police severely compromise the crime scene. As Ashwin uncovers gross incompetence and institutional misconduct, he pieces together forensic evidence that points away from the parents and toward external suspects. However, internal politics and personal rivalries within the investigative agency lead to Ashwin’s removal and the installation of a new team led by Paul, which favors the theory pointing to the parents.
Through intense dramatic sequences and sharp dialogue, Talvar delivers a chilling critique of the Indian criminal justice system, media sensationalism, and police corruption. The film demonstrates how prejudice, bureaucratic dysfunction, and public hysteria can overwhelm hard forensic evidence, leaving the definitive truth permanently shrouded in ambiguity.
