STORYLINE
Jim Bennett is a brilliant Los Angeles literature professor who secretly leads a reckless double life fueled by a severe, self-destructive gambling addiction. Operating under an all-or-nothing philosophy, Jim incurs massive debts to dangerous underground figures, including subterranean casino owner Mr. Lee and ruthless loan shark Neville Baraka. Within days, his total financial obligation reaches a staggering amount, leaving him with a strict seven-day ultimatum to settle his accounts or face fatal consequences.
Desperate to navigate his mounting danger, Jim approaches his wealthy, estranged mother, Roberta, for financial help while simultaneously seeking a massive loan from an influential, paternal loan shark named Frank. Amidst the chaos, Jim develops a close bond with Amy Phillips, one of his exceptionally talented students who works at an underground gambling den. Amy becomes the catalyst that forces Jim to confront his nihilistic outlook and reconsider the value of his own life.
In a final, audacious bid to resolve his debts in one stroke, Jim orchestrates a risky scheme involving a college basketball game played by one of his athletic students. Placing his remaining funds on a high-stakes roulette wheel, Jim bets everything on a single color. After securing a triumphant win that fully satisfies all creditors, Jim walks away from the cash winnings, completely abandoning his destructive addiction to start a clean life alongside Amy.
