STORYLINE
Set in 1825 during the Black War in the British penal colony of Van Diemen’s Land (now Tasmania), ‘The Nightingale’ follows Clare Carroll, a young Irish convict woman seeking vengeance. After suffering a horrific assault and witnessing the brutal murder of her husband and infant child by a sadistic British officer, Lieutenant Hawkins, and his men, Clare becomes consumed by a desire for revenge. When the authorities refuse to help, she takes matters into her own hands and pursues Hawkins through the treacherous Tasmanian wilderness.
To navigate the unforgiving terrain, Clare reluctantly hires Billy, an indigenous Tasmanian tracker who has suffered his own profound losses due to colonial violence. Despite initial hostility and deep-seated racial tensions, the two form an unlikely alliance forged by shared trauma and a mutual hatred of their oppressors. As they track the soldiers deeper into the forest, their journey becomes a harrowing exploration of violence, survival, and the heavy toll of vengeance, culminating in a powerful and devastating confrontation.
