STORYLINE
Set in 1973 near the conclusion of the Vietnam War, Monarch researcher Bill Randa leads an expedition to explore an uncharted Pacific territory known as Skull Island. Randa recruits former British SAS tracker James Conrad, anti-war photojournalist Mason Weaver, and a U.S. Army helicopter squadron commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Preston Packard. Upon arrival, the team conducts seismic testing by dropping explosives, which immediately draws the wrath of Kong, a colossal 100-foot ape who brutally dismantles their fleet and scatters the survivors across the hazardous terrain.
As the divided groups navigate the perilous jungle, Conrad’s team encounters Hank Marlow, a WWII pilot stranded on the island since 1944 who lives among the indigenous Iwi people. Marlow reveals that Kong is not a mindless monster, but the sacred protector of the island defending its inhabitants from vicious underground reptilian predators called Skullcrawlers. Meanwhile, Packard becomes consumed by vengeance, prioritizing Kong’s destruction over his team’s survival despite the growing threat of the subterranean beasts.
In the thrilling climax, Packard traps Kong with military traps, but Conrad and Weaver intervene to save the titan. Their confrontation is interrupted when the giant alpha Skullcrawler emerges. Kong battles the colossal predator in a fierce struggle, eventually tearing the beast apart with help from the surviving humans. The remaining expedition members escape the island, promising to protect Kong’s secret, setting the stage for the wider MonsterVerse.
