Mulan

Directed by Niki Caro, Disney’s 2020 live-action adaptation of Mulan reimagines the legendary Chinese folklore of Hua Mulan. Set in Imperial China, the empire faces a massive invasion by Rouran warriors led by Bori Khan and aided by the powerful shape-shifting sorceress Xianniang. When the Emperor issues a decree requiring one man from every household to join the Imperial Army, the eldest daughter of honored veteran Hua Zhou steps up to secretly take her ailing father’s place. Disguising herself as a male soldier named Hua Jun, she leaves her home to undergo rigorous military training under Commander Tung.

Throughout her intense training, Mulan struggles to suppress her extraordinary ‘Qi’ energy to maintain her disguise as a man. However, during a devastating ambush by Rouran forces, she comes to realize that concealing her true self limits her power. Stripping away her male armor, Mulan embraces her identity as a woman and harnesses her martial abilities to defeat the enemy vanguard, saving her battalion and earning the trust of her fellow soldier Honghui.

In the climactic finale at the Imperial City, Mulan rushes to rescue the captured Emperor from Bori Khan’s deadly trap. Sorceress Xianniang, moved by Mulan’s authenticity and honor, sacrifices herself to save Mulan from a fatal arrow. Mulan confronts and disarms Khan in a thrilling duel atop the palace construction scaffold, ultimately killing him and securing China’s freedom. Refusing a prestigious imperial post, Mulan returns home to seek her family’s forgiveness, where she is gifted a magnificent sword inscribed with the values of Loyalty, Bravery, Truth, and Devotion to Family.
