STORYLINE
Spider-Man 2 (2004), directed by Sam Raimi, follows Peter Parker as he struggles to balance his secret hero identity with his fraught personal life, college studies, and romantic feelings for Mary Jane Watson. Overwhelmed by emotional stress and existential burnout, Peter begins losing his superpowers, prompting him to abandon his role as Spider-Man and attempt a normal civilian life.
Meanwhile, brilliant scientist Dr. Otto Octavius suffers a catastrophic failure during a dangerous fusion energy demonstration sponsored by Harry Osborn. The accident kills Octavius’s wife and fuses four artificially intelligent mechanical tentacles to his spine, turning him into the vengeful villain Doctor Octopus (Doc Ock). Driven insane by the arms’ neural interface, Octavius seeks tritium to rebuild his destructive power reactor.
To secure the tritium from Harry, Doc Ock agrees to deliver Spider-Man, capturing Mary Jane to force Peter to intervene. Peter reclaims his powers and engages in an iconic, high-stakes battle against Doc Ock atop a speeding runaway subway train. In the gripping climax, Peter reveals his identity to Mary Jane, convinces Octavius to sacrifice himself to stop the reactor, and accepts his responsibility as New York City’s protector.
