Spider-Man (2002), directed by Sam Raimi, follows Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire), a shy high school student in Queens, New York, living with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben. During a genetics lab field trip, Peter is bitten by a genetically engineered spider, bestowing him with superhuman strength, heightened senses, wall-crawling abilities, and organic web-shooters. Initially exploiting his newfound powers to earn money in a underground wrestling match, Peter’s selfish decision lets a thief escape, leading directly to the murder of his Uncle Ben. Driven by remorse and Uncle Ben’s guiding ethos, ‘With great power comes great responsibility,’ Peter adopts the superhero identity of Spider-Man to protect New York City.

Meanwhile, brilliant scientist and industrialist Norman Osborn (Willem Dafoe), founder of Oscorp, tests an unproven chemical super-soldier serum on himself to secure a vital military contract. The serum grants him extraordinary strength but fractures his mind, spawning the murderous alter ego known as the Green Goblin. As Peter struggles with personal hardships—working as a freelance photographer for the Daily Bugle and pining over his childhood crush, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst)—the Green Goblin embarks on a campaign of terror across the city, eventually discovering Spider-Man’s secret identity.

The conflict escalates to a high-stakes climax at the Queensboro Bridge, where the Green Goblin forces Spider-Man to choose between saving Mary Jane or a cable car full of children. Spider-Man triumphantly rescues both, setting off a brutal final confrontation in an abandoned building. When Norman inadvertently impales himself with his own glider, Peter vows to keep his identity hidden from his best friend Harry Osborn (James Franco) and reluctantly rejects Mary Jane’s romantic feelings to keep her safe from future enemies.
